The Story of a Prophetic Picture

And the Prophetic Picture of a Story

Most pictures paint a story - this picture captures a particular moment in time. In the late nineties we moved to South Buckinghamshire in England after living abroad for a few years. New to the area, finding a church was a high priority for us. We joined a local parish church, and began a decades-long journey of faith with new friends who soon became close family.

As we had young children it was easier to host a bible study group than to get babysitters, The house was a fixer-upper and when we started the group there were no floorboards or plaster in the hallway, which was a great ice-breaker. 😉

One evening Edmund was away on a business trip, so I hosted the bible study group alone. After teas and coffees we quickly entered into the study part of the evening, and didn't find time to worship. So after the group had left, I listened to the cassette tape I had prepared. The image of a bright light over our house came into my mind's eye as I sang along, so I pulled out the kids' poster paints to paint this picture. It came very quickly, and was the first thing I had attempted to paint in years.

The picture is called 'Open Heavens' and represents the Spirit of God drawing close because of the atmosphere of worship in the house. In the years that followed I continued to paint at night, when I saw a picture during times of prayer and praise. The goal was never to show the pictures to anyone else, just to get them down on paper as a record of a special time.

Gouache prophetic painting on board. Two houses occupy the lower half of painting, the left hand house is in shadow, the right hand house is bathed in yellow light from a bright source of light in the sky above the house. The rest of the sky is very dark blue to indicate night time.

This is a very quick alla prima painting. For me, it confirms that God draws even closer to us when we focus on Him, which is a wonderful promise. Each prophetic picture carries a story, and we overcome life’s trials by the power of the story that God places in each one of us.

What is God adding to your story this week?
